I've been using one of the 28-135/IS lenses since they came out. The IS is
referred to as first generation only because it does not offering Mode-2
(panning mode) like some of the L-series telephotos. I have been VERY happy
with this lens.
As for IS-induced tripod blur... not in practical use. This past August I
shot some deep woods waterfalls using a tripod and the 28-135. It wasn't
until I was finished that I realized I had forgotten to turn OFF the IS. I
used a lot of slow shutter speeds to blur the moving water... speeds ranging
from 1sec-8sec. When I got the slides back I was suprised to find they were
all TACK SHARP. It was unbelievable. I have since spoken with other 28-135
users who made the same dumb mistake and found their pictures were not
ruined.
Note -- Canon recommends turning off the IS on a tripod and so do I. :-)
