I've owned the 100-300L f/5.6. Hated it and sold it off in less than a
month. The slowness was really a problem for me and I found it almost
impossible to use handheld. Maybe if you do mostly tripod work it might
work out for you. Even the "sharpness" of the lens was disappointing to
me. The problem is that there is no easy alternatives for you in this
range and price. I eventually opted for the 300 f/4 L IS and haven't
regretted it although shelling out the dough hurt at first.
