Hi Don,
4 or 5 years ago I was looking at 100-300 zoom range, and was able to
test/use both 100-300 L and 100-300 USM. AF on 100-300 L was
really-really slow, and was not suitable for people/travel photography I
mostly use. So I got 100-300 USM, use it for about 3 years and quite
satisfied with its results.
Last year I've traded in my 100-300 USM with a used 80-200/2.8 L, and I
can say that I'm very happy afterwards. Result of 80-200 L is GREAT, and
pair with Tamron 1.4x SP TC its result was still better overall than
100-300 USM. Its AF is also fast, even though its not USM.
The downside: its size and weight comparing with 100-300, but once I've
getting used to it, I no longer think about it and carry around 80-200 L
everywhere.
regards,,, Bambang.
