Hi,
I own the 380EX which doesn't have any display at all. Nevertheless, I can
tell whenever the subject is "in range" by using FEL and controlling the
flash exposure symbol (in the viewfinder: lower left corner).
It's particulary useful when using FP flash, since you can actually check
out if the flash is able to put out enough power for your exposure. In those
cases you have a compromise between the speed (in FP we're speaking about
more than X-Sync, in my case more than 1/125) and f/stop.
I'm certainly sure that you don't need a display to know what you want. ;-)
