This question is a hard one and iss coming up from time to time. The way you put 
it, there is no valid answer, IMHO. While 35mm is - for me - the best all around 
lens, it will work neither for most interiors nor for bird photography. So if I 
could have only one prime lens, it would be a 35mm. I have the 35/2, but a 35/1.4
with USM and FTM would certainly be nice to have ;-) Anyway, I would REALLY feel
limited. And I'd be tempted to forget about EOS and SLRs alltogather and make it
a Leica rangefinder then.
