First, I'll admit that one of my Canon bodies is an IX. Just so you'll all
know I'm completely objective.

I don't consider it a replacement for my 35mm equipment, so for me
comparisons aren't very useful. Yes, Kodak and Fuji only make 7 print films
and one slide film, ranging from ASA 100 to 800, but when I want to travel
light, nothing beats an IX with a small lens like the 50 or 24-85 even
20-35. It makes a Rebel 2000 and 28-80 look and feel like a 1n with a
booster and 100-400 IS (well, almost). And unlike a p&s, it's a real SLR,
with all of the attendant controls. It even supports E-TTL so I can take
along a 380EX or 420EX if I need some extra light. Try that with that ELPH
Jr. in your glove box.

As for batteries, alas, there is no grip and those little 123a batteries
don't last forever, so every 60 rolls or so (probably 3+ years for me), I
have to spring for a new set.

But I can do things like midroll change, full manual, panorama (not as sharp
as a Noblex, though).

It's short on custom functions and doesn't support the 1200mm lens (only 600
4.0 and below). And I wouldn't try to make anything bigger than an 8x10 with
the negatives, but then it's not my "real" camera, so who cares? Both Canon
and Nikon tried to make full featured APS SLR's like the IX and discovered
what you already know - it's not the replacement for 35mm, and so now
they're both aiming a little lower. I bought my kit when they were still
$475 with the 24-85, so today's prices are even more enticing if you already
have a nice selection of EF lenses.

As for my one prime lens, it would be the 50 1.4 if we're talking lenses we
already have, otherwise I think I'd take the 85 1.2L.
