I had one of those! Gave it to my younger brother
years ago... it still works. :-)

Actually the built-in in the Rebel S is nice, it's got
a decently large flashtube and GN, unlike the ones in
the Rebel G, Rebel XS and Rebel 2000.

That's a good match for the Rebel (non-S), it was
"made" for that camera, it uses the camera's
through-the-lens (TTL) sensor to determine flash
exposure and couples with your Rebel S 100%. (Which
would be true for any Speedlite with an "E" in the
model number).
You get a slightly higher guide number than the
built-in, and as long as you use the camera in the
horizontal orientation, redeye is minimized and the
flash shadows go downward due to the extra distance
between the flashtube and lens axis. You will get some
funky shadows in the vertical orientation if the flash
is in the camera's hot shoe.
It would be a "fire-and-forget" flash on the Rebel.

These units would both be bad choices. These are for
the older manual focus A-series Canon SLR's like the
A1, AE-1, AE-1 Program, AL-1, AT-1 and AV-1. They will
not couple with the TTL flash sensor in the Rebel,
(you will notice they have flash output sensors on the
front) so they would be strictly manual. The trigger
voltage at the hot shoe may be too high for the Rebel
to handle, but I'm not certain about that.
You might want to keep your eyes open for a 300EZ,
those are getting fairly inexpensive here in the
States. They are fairly powerful (just about twice the
power of the 160E) and have a automatic zoom head,
which is nice if you have a short zoom mounted, it's
good for some extra range at the tele end. There are
other more expensive and powerful EZ flashes, with
more features (bounce/tilt, multiflash, etc.) EX
flashes will work also, but are more expensive and the
Rebel S can't use the E-TTL flash metering, which is
the big plus of that range.
