I've yet to shoot airshows with my Canon gear, but on all previous
occasions I've metered off the grass in front of me and set the camera to
manual mode with the aperture almost or at fully open. I've used my
Minolta 400mm f4.5 in the past and found that length pretty good for
aircraft in flight and groups of aircraft during aerobatic displays.
Re-meter often if the light is changing.

Use slide film.
