Gary, I should stick to what Gerard and Jay have said, from your description your
camera meter and flash meter are working properly it is simply the complex way in
which the E-TTL flash is designed to work that gives these seemingly mysterious
readings (pre flash and background exposure and all!).  I would test these ideas
before throwing the meter away or returning the camera.  I feel that Robert's
assessment might not be fully correct and perhaps a little misleading!
I know its a pain, but sit down with the manuals and try to figure out in your
mind exactly what they are telling you as a theoretical understanding will be of
great support to practical application, and indeed vice-versa, but having both is
a must!!
