Hi Ken!
I use an external meter when doing studio work. In that situation it's used
to measure the light and ratios of the flashes. I've used a Gossen Sixtomat
Flash meter, and compared to the cameras meter in most other situations they
will agree. I have only noticed that the cameras can be a little bit off
when trying to determine the exposure for very bright or very dark subjects
as they will think that they are 18% grey. If you're not using
studio-flashes and are unsure if your camera will measure correctly - use a
grey card. I would say that both my EOS 3 and my EOS 500N meters are
sufficient in most situations.
So - my suggestion would be to rather use a grey card than to buy an
expensive light meter.
Best Regards,
Maria
