It allows faster focussing in the shorter range.  The lens will not run
through its full range of focus, depending on the switch position.  If
you are shooting critters and are using AF, you have a better chance of
getting them in focus.

My 300 has a similar switch, 2.5M-infinity and 6M-infinity.  If I am
shooting no closer than 6M it saves time should it be necessary to 
"hunt" through the focus range.
