One suggestion I would make is to consider using a film with less contrast than Velvia 
for your white birds, especially if they are going to be against dark backgounds 
and/or if it is a sunny day. If you must use an oversaturated film, you may get better 
results with Kodak E100VS; otherwise I would recommend Astia (if you can find it), the 
new Provia 100F, or if you like accurate color,
Agfa RSX II 100. IMO Velvia is *not*  a general-purpose film; also, it can be 
difficult to scan, if that is a consideration.
