When we were discussing "which prime lens if only one" I got to
thinking about the different ways to see. Came up with some
questions/observations:
Often when framing a shot,we alternate between looking direct at the
subject and looking through the viewfinder. Of course you notice the
relative size of the subject and its image in the VF. It seems to me
that these are about matched at around 85mm. (Could that account for
the popularity of the focal length?) Now is there a theory that
encompasses this? Does it really have any bearing on the final
product, since the scale of the print/slide is going to be completely
different? At some point, though, I'm sure they converge, depending
again, on viewing distance. Does the human eye have a "focal length?"
The other factor, harder to measure and probably more variable between
individuals, is the angle of view. I'm sure many folks like the
35-50mm as a prime because it sees close to what the eye sees "in
focus." Anything beyond is "peripheral," but again I'm sure this
varies form person to person.
Sure makes me appreciate what an amazing "machine" the eye is.
