Ken,
I believe you've forgotten that most viewfinder images are reduced to about
.7 magnification. This is why around 85mm appears "normal." Withouth this
reduction in the viewfinder, I think you'd find 50mm to be "normal," hence
it became the "normal" lense for 35mm.
50mm = 1X but viewfinder image = .7X
85mm = 1.7X viewfinder image = 1.19X
70mm = 1.4X viewfinder image = .98X
At least that's my understanding. BTW, I used to own a Pentax manual 35mm
and I'm not sure what the image reduction was in the viewfinder, but it
appeared more "normal" with a 50mm than either of my Canons does now.
