Peter, I do also have the 70-200 2.8L.  Since the center AF point works best
with a 2.8 or faster lens, I was leaning away from anything slower

Yes, AF may be better with a faster lens but you can usually get by in
churches since most have windows that provide decent light for AF to
function properly.  Which camera body do you have?  Worst case you can use
Manual focus should AF become non-functional.  If I had to pick fixed
lenses, I would use a 50 and 35.
