I don't know if this is too late, but a Canon photographer uses tracing paper. In Canon's Flash Work, a photographer they call "the Maestro" uses tracing paper infront of an off camera 550EX. The book/pamphlet also mentions tracing paper in the photography terms section under diffused light.
