I have extensive soft box experience. IMHO the one you're looking at is
barely adequate for walking around candids. The _min_ size I would suggest
is something like the Chimera Mini -- 12x16 in. See

The bigger the light source, the softer or more diffuse the light. You
might actually be better off with an umbrella. My personal preference is
the Photogenic Eclipse, which can be mounted on a stand with a Bogen 2905
Swivel Umbrella Adapter. To make that work with the 420 & the camera's TTL,
you'd need the off-camera flash connections though.
Of course, the REAL answer is -- take your family to a professional
photographer every couple of years for REAL portraits, but that's another
kettle of fish.
