It is likely that this is because the extension tubes don't "tell" the body
about their presence the way the extenders do, so the AF system doesn't
"know"
that it's working at f/8 (at the long end). One question might be, how well
does
the AF work in this situation?

Correct the extention tubes do not tell the body about their existence.
AF works perfectly and only shows any problem in very dim light. Hence, you
can have a great lens plus more true macro with the extention tube all in
one.
Maybe a good backpacking lens? But I don't backpack, I drive!
