That is strange. I have never used an Elan IIe so I can't say how well
it works with it, but after reading your note I dug up the lens, tube
and every EOS body I could find, namely EOS 3, EOS 5 and EOS 300 and
tried it with all of them, and none could focus even remotely useful
way, in moderately dim light (measured 1/30 at f/5.6 with ISO 100).
They simply failed to achieve focus at all most of the time.
Without the tube, perfect focus every time.
Maybe there's something in Elan IIe, or maybe my 28-135 is a lemon
(but otherwise it works perfectly)... Anyway, if anybody plans on
relying on AF with that combo, make sure you test it with your
own camera.

I do backpack, and that is indeed a nice combination, even without AF
with the tube.
