I've found my EOS1n's AF behaviour to be noticeably better (for both
hockey and wildlife) than the Minolta Dynax 9 I replaced with it. I put
this down to smaller AF sensors. I wonder if you'd get on better if you
chose a particular sensor (I presume you are able to do that with the
D30?).

Having metered off what? A player's face? I would have thought matrix mode
would be OK. That's what I use.

You'd look lots more professional!

There are two factors here. Firstly, readyness of the camera to take more
shots at *any* time. Secondly, a hockey player, or group thereof, can move
quite a distance in a fraction of a second - although I only rarely take
sequences, I find that even at 5fps (EOS1n HS) there is still a very
noticeable difference between frames. I have used various cameras for ice
hockey now (Minolta X-700, 700si, Dynax 9) with frame rates of 3fps and up
and I do find I benefit from higher rates. From reading the EOS1n manual,
its interesting that the RS version doesn't actually offer any higher rate
unless you use the RS mode, which means Single Shot AF (useless for
action). The EOS1v can tank along at 9fps in AI Servo, but you must have
the expensive NiMH pack and charger to achieve that - total UK price
getting on for 2000 UKP for just the body.
More images certainly need more editing and I'm willing to accept that
give its a lot less effort than scanning and de-dusting and de-scratching.
