I set my EOS 30's (=7E) C.Fn.11 to 1 and C.Fn.12 to 1. And the camera works
fine. Yes indeed, to enable direct selection I have to turn ECF off and do
the focusing first using the AE-L button (C.Fn.4 set to 1). I found that the
camera focusing function had to be activated, before I could select focusing
point manually. Hope this help.
Now since I set the C.Fn.4 to 1, I seem to lose the FE-L capability. I was
hoping that the function was done by the shutter button, but it seemed to do
only the AE-L. I assume it as a bug in camera software. Does any EOS 3 or
EOS 1 user experience the same problem?

Which mode are you having trouble with? If you have a 7E, do you have ECF
switched off?
