I very fortunately had a spare set of alkalines with me otherwise I might
as well have gone home! How embarrasing! I have some NiCads but they are
mostly old and don't hold their charge any more.

I find it a bit of a pain getting the AAs out of the battery holder for
the PB-E1. If I could make a thingy that I could just slide the holder
into for it to recharge, perhaps held against a couple of prongs with an
elastic band, it would save a lot of farting about.

IMHO the rechargeable packs for the boosters are a complete rip off since
they simply contain ordinary rechargeables in a sealed pack. One could
even modify the standard holder for the PB-E2 to get the higher speed
drive modes available on the EOS1v (as has been discussed here before) if
you are going to use NiMH AAs. Indeed, you can probably now buy much
higher capacity rechargeables than are used in the sealed units. Even
second hand, the Canon charger costs at least 150 UKP here - blatant rip
off!
