I have had good success using an umbrella on a light stand with a 550EX. My
other 550 is on the camera, usually with the on camera's flash set to off.
I get much softer lighting with this than with any of my lumiquest softbox
or pocket bouncers. There is no way an on flash portable softbox like the
lumiquest can compete with a 42 inch umbrella for soft wrap around lighting.
For fill, I usually us a large reflector placed opposite the flash/umbrella.
The on camera flash just isn't positioned right to provide good fill for the
shots I've tried so far. For positioning of the umbrella, I put it real
close, just out of the viewfinder, so aim doesn't have to be exact.
