In general I would agree with Bob; and I certainly try not to use the 2x
extender unless absolutely necessary. However, I have on occasion gotten
surprisingly good results with the 2x on a 300/2.8L. Of course, the quality of
your lens will have a lot to do with the quality of the results you get with an
extender, and certainly once cost is factored in, it really isn't fair to
compare the 100-300 zoom to the big tele. So at that kind of price point, Bob is
probably correct that the 100-300 zoom will perform better than a $300 lens with
a 2x extender attached. The sum of the parts and all that. . . .

In my experience, on a quality lens, Canon's 1.4x extender is for all practical
purposes undetectable in terms of its effect on image quality.
