I haven't seen anyone mention what I consider to be the best film scanner
resource on the web.
http://www.cix.co.uk/~tsphoto/tech/filmscan/menu.htm
At this site they compare several different scanners by comparing
performance using a "Kodak Q60" calibrated Ektachrome transparency. There
are two "control" scans as well, one using an inexpensive Kodak PhotoCD scan
and another using a drum scan.
To make a long story short the Polaroid 4000 dpi unit and the Nikon
SuperCoolscan LS-2000 (at 2780 dpi) are pretty much tied for first place.
But times are a-changin' Nikon has just announced a new 4000dpi unit that
should be pretty compelling. It has an optional adapter to handle uncut
rolls of film and can also use the 50-slide feeder from the old LS-2000. All
of the new scanners use ED glass to improve their performance.
http://www.nikon.co.uk/ls4000.htm (I think this one retails for around
$1400)
Nikon also has a new multi-format scanner if you need medium format scanning
capabilities:
http://www.nikon.co.uk/ls8000.htm (don't know price)
Nikon has also updated the low-end LS-30:
http://www.nikon.co.uk/ls40.htm (around $800)
These won't be available until March, so you won't find scans on the scanner
site mentioned above.
