~I just got an Elan IIe and was about to get my first lens for
~it. I know the
~28-80 kit lens has received horrible reviews but I was wondering what
~people's impressions are of the 28-90mm USM lens. Is it
~better? Or should I
~pay twice the price for a 28-105 USM lens? Remember that I am
~trying to be a
~little economical here.

Hi,

It all depends on if you think you'll be adding to your lens collection in
the later years.

Most EF lenses have an immediate drop in resale value when you buy them and
the situation is worse with third party lenses.
So when buying lenses, think of it as buying for keeps. Decide now itself
not to upgrade a lens, buy the best you can.

Your lens purchases may be few and far in between but everytime you buy one,
you'll be really happy.

So go for the best lens in the category you want, and if you can't afford
it, wait and save.

If you already have the 28-80 kit zoom and want to upgrade, then just wait
and save and eventually buy the 28-135IS. You won't regret it.

If you only have a camera body and this is really your first lens, you
should still go for the 28-135 IS. You won't need to buy a general purpose
zoom in that range again for your Canon.
If you get a 28-105 right now, you'll probably never get yourself a
28-135IS.

If you can't afford the 28-135IS and just *have to have* good quality, you
should go in for the 50mm f1.8 for now. You'll have a working camera with an
excelent lens which will give you brilliant images. And when you can in the
future, you can get yourself a 28-135IS. You'll still love your 50mm.

Cheers,
Shashvat
