Hi Bob,

I suspect that you have a problem with your Canon Elan IIe, 
especially if you have a blinking-battery symbol with the
Canon EF 75-300mm zoom.

Are you aware that the Elan IIe has a severe problem with
some batteries.  Deep in the battery compartment are several
contacts which need to be fully depressed in order for the
camera to operate.

Try to use a small wad of folded paper to push the battery
deeper into the compartment.

Does this solve your BBS (Blinking-Battery-Symbol) problem?
