Has anyone at the show checked out the new Nikon scanners?
I saw them at MacWorld last month. The Coolscan 4000 ED
scans at 4000 dpi, 48 bit as opposed to Canon's 42 bit.
Six bits up at those specs is probably not a big deal unless
you will make large prints. But it has a Dynamic Range of 4.2
which I thought was MUCH better than Canon's 3.4 DR.
The Nikon uses FireWire which is 33x faster than USB and 10x
faster than SCSI2 (5x faster if Canon really uses SCSI2 Fast).
This is great for anyone that has a Mac which is 3 years old
or less since FireWire is built-in. Anyone that has an older
Mac or most PCs, a FireWire PCI card comes standard.
It was said to cost around $500 more than the Canon but who
knows what the actual street price will be. I would love to
compare them side-by-side to see if the $500 difference is
really worth it. All my camera equipment is Canon but it
looks like they are still a bit behind Nikon in the film
scanner category. :(
