Buddy,

In the scanner market, dynamic range claims are
somewhat subject to inflation by the marketing
department. The Nikon scanner is capable of, I
believe, 14 bits per color channel (42 bits/pixel
overall). There has been some discussion of this on
the comp.periphs.scanners newsgroup on Usenet, and my
understanding is that the 4.2 dmax claim is based on
the maximum theoretical dynamic range you could ever
get out of a 42-bit scan, neglecting noise and other
factors. In practice I suspect the real dmax will be
somewhat less, but nonetheless I think the new Nikon
scanner will be unmatched in its price bracket, unless
Minolta or someone else has some new high-end scanners
in the works that haven't been announced yet.

Paul
