I have trivia question I cannot find the answer to regarding the EF 24mm
f1.4 L lens. I recently bought one of these lenses used for $850.

The Canon Museum Site states that the lens uses a ground and polished
aspherical lens element. This is usually the case for wide angle L
lenses. The current advertising literature and brochures state that the
lens incorporates a replicated aspherical element. Was it always one or
the other or did production start one way and then switch? I have
always considered replicated lenses to be a cheaper alternative to
ground glass. Is Canon trying to cut corners on L lenses now?

I compared this lens design with the FD model. They are virtually
identical in block diagram "formula" but because of the EOS film plane
distances the EF glass is about 20% bigger in diameter and overall
length.
