Pierre,

First, using the 72mm filter on the 77mm lens with a stepping ring will
cause vignetting.

You can go the other way, 77mm filters on 72mm lenses with stepping
rings, without the vignetting but the hoods usually can't be used.  But
that is not as big a problem if you don't keep the larger filters on at
all times.

I always have a 1-A or UV filter on my lenses.

Depending on what you shoot outdoors, you might consider an "enhancing"
filter for foliage or a slight warming filter, 81-B.

The circular polarizer will act as a neutral density filter although it
is not graduated.
