A monopod is very useful for shooting sports with a telephoto. It really doesn't
take all that much practice to get the hang of it. You might find that fiddling
with the zoom while tracking the action to be a distraction, so you might want
to pick a focal length and shoot at that for a bit, then change focal lengths
and shoot a different type of shot at that length. I find that I prefer a
fixed-focal-length focal length for sports. Keep in mind too that it isn't
necessary to fit the athlete's entire body in every frame--you can't be too
close as long as the lens will focus!

One thing I've found helpful when using a monopod is to use a short remote
release, which I hold in the same hand that grasps the monopod. This helps
prevent inadvertent jerking or pushing of the camera-monopod combo when I press
the shutter.

Not necessarily. In daylight or very good stadium lighting you should be able to
use ISO 400 film, or even ISO 100 if it's nice and sunny. But for mediocre night
lighting you might need ISO 800 (I like NHG II) or even 1600. If you are
shooting at night, don't forget that the light will not change, so taking an
incident reading with a handheld meter and setting the camera to full manual
exposure may give you the best and most consistent exposure.

What would you consider low-priced? I have an EOS 5 with fewer than 20 rolls
through it, and a VG-10 grip, that I'd like to sell.
