Hey Bob,
Are you the same guy making a name for himself in the Scottish Papers
this week? ;o)

The best measurement in the field for much wildlife is an ambient
reading: the worst is to let the auto-exposure spoil the shot.

I'm specifically thinking of Scottish birds, Puffins against the sea
one sec, then a tern against the sky, than a shag against a rock.

Ambient readings take care of that: set the camera to manual and off
you go. Personally, that gives a much higher hit rate on difficult
subjects than matrix.

What I would really like though (not on my 1n anyway) is an exposure
lock button: a proper one like my 20-y-old camera used to have. That
retained the latest setting till you turned it off. The trouble with
using the 5-sec "*" button is that it is just not long enough. If I
could "meter off grass + lock" then compose I would use the AE more.

For most averagey landscapes AE works fine (until you do panoramas and
want to lock the exposure for more than 5 sec again :o()
