They did it with the 10/10s and the 100/Elan.  The
biggest problem with barcodes was carrying around the
barcode reader and the book of barcodes, looking up
the one you wanted, scanning it .... you get the idea.

Minolta did something similar with cards, but again
with similar problems because you could only have (I
think) one card at a time.

Canon has custom functions.  Maybe the future way is
to beef up the custom functions by allowing *multiple*
add in chips which introduce some of the features
discussed controlled by additional CFs that come with
the chip. I say multiple chips, so you don't have to
unplug one and plug in another (a pain!).
