Just a small and unimportant note:

Since it is "Elan 7" (not "EOS 7") there are still numbers (2, 4,
6, 7, 8, 9) for quite some years to go...

I just can't see why Canon didn't continue with "EOS 2" or
"EOS 9" and maintain numerical order, instead of jump to "EOS 5"
after the EOS 10.
After some time all new Canon users will be more or less confused
about the age order.

Well, they could even use hexadecimal numbers "A".."F" after all
values below 10 have been used (thus EOS 1Z, EOS A, EOS A0, EOS A00
and so on).

The U.S. market is another story.
