I use this regularly to shoot outdoor sports events,
especially soccer. I find it works very well. No,
it's not as sharp at the long end as a fixed 400 5.6
(especially at the edges), but it's a heck of a lot
more versatile. And for the use I put it to, edge
sharpness isn't a big deal, as it's usually out of
focus background.

I get acceptable results even wide open. Stopping
down to an effective f8 gives me results sharp enough
that film grain is more of a limiting factor than is
the lens (using ISO 200 negative film).

And for shooting a fast moving sport like soccer, the
versatility of the zoom more than makes up for any
loss of sharpness. Using a fixed 400 and I'd miss too
many shots when the action gets close. And a fixed
300 isn't near long enough to get tight shots when the
action is toward the middle of the field.

Now then, there's one lens I'd ALMOST rather have for
this purpose, and that's the 100-400 IS. the 140mm
short end of the zoom/2x combo is sometimes a little
long, and IS on a monopod would be great. But I don't
like the push-pull zoom. I also couldn't give up the
speed of the 70-200 2.8 by itself, and can't really
justify owning both.
