When I started making 8x10 enlargements in my darkroom (B&W) the difference 
between consumer zooms and primes was very apparent. The zoom lenses were 
very variable in their performance depending on the f stop and mm setting. 
Projected slides were OK, but were less crisp and snappy. Of course, one 
prime costs as much as a wide ranging zoom.
