Yes, Outlook Express is a truly lousy email client. In this case your only
options are to enable or disable automatic quoting in replies. Using Netscape, I
simply leave autoquoting off and just hit the Quote button if I want to include
part of the original message. I then delete whatever parts I don't need and
insert my comment where appropriate. Netscape 3.0 is a long time ago; the design
of the Messenger client has changed quite a bit since then. To get the same
effect with Outlook Express you'd need to disable autoquoting and then
cut-and-paste (Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V) from the original message.

I'm not sure I understand this; with Outlook Express 5, if autoquoting is
enabled, the quoted message appears at the beginning of the reply, and you can
just go to the end and start typing--or add in spaces with the return key, or
whatever you want to do to compose your reply.
