Are there really mailing lists that require you to put your quote at the 
bottom? I find this style of quoting quite counterintuitive and 
sometimes hard to read, especially when message and quote don't fit on 
the same page.

It's easier to read the question before the answer. Even more so in a 
second or higher level of replies. IMHO, it's also preferable to split 
up the quote and answer right after the part you are refering to, one 
question at a time. It's much easier for me to quickly understand the 
context of each answering paragraph.

All this becomes still a lot more important if you are  like me - crazy 
enough to read and reply to those mails on a Palmtop device with a tiny 
screen that shows just about four to five normal length lines on a page. 
;-)

Finally, long quotes and multiple footers really ruin a digest easily. I 
even like to have the cursor at the top of the quote first. That way, I 
can work through the quote from top to bottom, erasing the parts I don't 
refer to and inserting the answers directly below the questions.
