The point of the OmniBounce is to get a bounce-like effect *without* needing a
surface off of which to bounce. Certainly the instructions that came with my two
OmniBounce units say nothing about needing a wall or ceiling, and I don't use
them that way. For example, they work perfectly well outdoors. Some models
require that you tilt the flashhead up at a 45° angle, so that diffused light
from the flash doesn't enter the flash's light sensor (and even this is not
necessary in TTL mode), while others come with slide-on "barn door"-like
attachments that serve the same purpose (for example, the diffuser for the 199A
Speedlite).
