for
> the 540EZ & 550EX version, in their entirety:
I've done some omnibounce testing. First of all, I got no barn doors
with mine for the 380EX. Secondly, I use it with TTL and an EOS 10. I find
no problem using it straight ahead to soften flash at least a little bit.
It's great to get coverage of my 20mm as well. If you are using a very short
lens like the 50/1.8 you might be concerned about light entering the lens
directly. I don't have a really short lens, so I could not test that, but it
makes sense. The omni throws light in all directions, including straight
down, and even to the rear a bit.
I always use the omnibounce, except when I need all the power I can get
for longer distances. I use it outdoors for fill flash and it's great. I
haven't noticed long recharge times, nor have I had any exposure problems.
My tests are up at my website. As well as the omnibounce test, all the
'Mochi Making' shots in the gallery were taken outdoors in daylight with the
omnibounce in the straight ahead position. You cannot tell that flash was
used in these shots, except maybe for the nice even lighting of faces in
noon time sun.
You will notice a very small difference in the tests between no omni and
straight ahead as far as shadow, but it's there. Also, slightly less glare
off of oily skin is noticeable but small. I found the omni added a very
small amount of warmness to the flash, which might be more noticeable with
slide film.
