glad to hear everyone was okay, and I feel your pain about the loss of
lens. I had a 100mm macro that fell out of an overhead bin on an airplane
one day... I still miss that thing.
my first question is, when you shot that roll of film after the accident,
did the images in the viewfinder appear blurry at all? if your camera was
even able to focus through the lens after that, I would suspect you'd see
if things were out of focus through the viewfinder of your camera. in that
case the lab probably hosed your prints and you should ask for a refund.
on the other hand, lenses are not very good at surviving shock. especially
L lenses where the elements are so close to each other. one of those
pieces of glass being shifted ever so slightly will render your lens
basically useless (as was the case with my 100mm)
in terms of repair I don't know what to tell ya. I wasn't able to get my
100mm repaired for anything less than the cost of a new one. luckily, my
renters insurance covered it. I know that homeowners insurance is
different though, so check to see if you have a policy that covers your
personal posessions when they're OUT of your home.
when you call your insurance company, make sure you just ask if your
policy covers things like this. DON'T tell them about your lens yet. when
my old minolta kit was stolen out of my car last year (before I lived in
this apartment and I was under my parent's homeowners insurance) I called
and said "hey I lost my gear, is it covered?" they gave me the runaround
on the issue and I STILL haven't resolved it.

again, I feel your pain. I've been those college budget shoes before :)
