I would check with your homeowners and renters insurance.  With State Farm's standard 
renter's insurance covers it with a $250 deductible.  BUT, I use the camera gear for 
commercial purposes so I have to pay an extra $5 a month.  That is worth it to me.  
With that rider I don't think I have to pay the deductible and they even adjust it for 
inflation.

The first thing I did before I even put my L lenses on the camera was to fax the 
invoice to the insurance company so it was covered immediately.

I hope all turns out well for you, I feel your pain.  I think I'd rather break and arm 
than loose one of my 'L' lenses.  I will be on the college budget thing later this 
year.
