For my money, the Leica R8 focusing screen is the best combination of
brightness/contrast I've seen (but this is a manual focus camera).
Its viewfinder (with good eye relief) is a joy to use.
I also hear that Bill Maxwell's screens are a nice compromise between
brightness/contrast (but I have yet to see one of these):

Anybody out there using a Maxwell screen in an EOS? How does it rate
for manual focusing?

The R8 may have a nice screen, but the camera is a dog. I had one and it
died
out of the box. Leica replaced it with a second one which worked OK.
For me the best screen is the one in the Rolleiflex 6008i, in 35mm cameras
you'd be hard pressed to better the one in the Maxxum 7. The Contax N1 also
has a nice screen, but having used it for a month, I find this camera to
also
be a dog. SLOW AF, confusing controls, but good optics. I'll stick with
Canon.
