re: focus overshoot:
What brand of teleconverters are you using, non-Canon units cause these
lens to focus too fast, and overshoot the target, the Canon extenders slow
the focus down, I have never had a problem with either my current IS or
previous non-IS version of this lens on an EOS-3 provided I keep to the
Canon extenders. On the otherhand, if I used a Tamron 2x converter it
can do some wild hunting with lower light levels.
re: modes
Yes mode 2 is for horz panning, however if you are in mode 2 and keep the
lens steady while IS is running, it automatically switches back to mode 1
in a couple of seconds. Either mode is for Tripod mount, however unless
you have a gimbal mount, generally you are not panning on the tripod. so
use mode 1.
