Julian and Dan -
Ok, I see your points - or whomever. I do really like the surrounding
out-of-focus stuff in the Oriole shot above. That's a marvelous
photo. The owl's bokeh is less remarkable, although the Owl himself
is great.
If the Nikon shot is a negative example, I can see that it has in
common with mine the presence of *discernable* shapes in the bokeh.
Perhaps this what people find objectionable, and as you point out,
Dan, it can be seen as a distraction. Maybe this then is what is
meant as "smoothness," or lack thereof. Sorry, I'm just learning.
In the Nikon 80-400 shot I actually find the presence of *one*
spheroid more distracting than the multitude of them in the 28-90
shot, although the sharpness of the 80-400 is obviously in another
league from the EF 28-90. Besides, if all the attention *were* on the
flower, you'd notice that it's not that sharp! :-) Anyway, I've
got better lenses now - working up to that 100mm Macro still, though.
I guess it comes down to "know your equipment" and exploit its
strengths *and * weaknesses.
