Hi Gerard,

I have the Manfrotto 330. The flash shoes are plastic, and work only
by friction: there is no hole for the Canon flash shoe locking pin or
even a 1/4" 20tpi threaded nut.

A heavy 550EX can fall out of the groove and hit the water/ground.

The swivel arrangement for the camera plate also does not have
a mechanism for exactly 90 degrees of rotation. You have to
tighten the locking nut against a rubber gasket. A heavy camera
can cause it to rotate if not locked tight enough.

In addition, if you use a battery pack/grip (e.g. BP-300 on the
Elan 7E, or BP-50 on an EOS 1000), the camera rides very high
in the mount.

Cheers
Julian Loke
