You are not missing something obvious, it is Canon
to have missed this obvious thing. Considering that
all EF lenses feed back distance info (you can check
that by looking at the EXIF data), it is really
dumb beyond cure not to use this info.

If I am not mistaken, Nikon has that feature in its system and is widely regarded as
having a more effective flash system, especially for off-center subjects.
Let's see, there is a useful feature and their major competitor has it. What does
that mean? Most likely, Nikon has a patent for it and refuses to license it to Canon.
(Probably the same reason that Nikon doesn't have IS or ECF). I do remember reading
somewhere that the only reason Nikon and some of the 3rd party manufacturers have USM
is because the Canon patent expired.
