No, but reading it from the lens data could and I think that is where the
snag is.
Obviously Nikon is better at clinging to their patents than Canon is.
Anyway, the Canon ETTL system is building a formidable reputation already
and the D-type flash metering will have to be pretty darn good to beat that
(I've seen a marked improvement in my own flash photography since I got the
550EX)
