How often do you do that with on camera flash?
I cannot think of even one single instance in
more than twenty years. I'd use the flash off
camera then, I'd use slave systems, but certainly
not hotshoe mounted flash.

Easy. Use the distance info until the camera reports
infinity, and then switch to plain old TTL metering.
Or make the flash switchable between distance reading
and simple TTL readings.

They are dumb enough not to use it when it makes
sense and make it switchable in cases where it
doesn't make sense.
However, I think we all agree that using AE with
spot metering on a randomly selected part of your
subject is asking for tomatoes to be thrown...
